Vision of a New Life: A Play about A.C. Van Raalte -May 6

  • Holland Area Arts Council 150 E 8th St Holland United States (map)

Vision of a New Life focuses on a rural Dutch family as they follow A. C. Van Raalte in his quest to set up a New Netherlands in America. The play begins in the fall of 1846, in Arnhem, Netherlands, as Minister A. C. Van Raalte announces his reasons and plans for emigrating to America, against a barrage of criticism from other churches, the government, and the local population. The play continues in the fall of 1847 in what is now Holland, Michigan, as the colonist struggle to retain their vision of a completely Christian community. At times humorous, at times tragic, the first Dutch colonists struggle to survive in a foreign landscape.

The play was commissioned by the Holland Museum in 2011, funded by a Michigan Arts and Cultural Affairs Grant. This production is sponsored by The Van Raalte Institute of Hope College, The Holland Community Theater, and the Holland Arts Center.
