Creative Sewing - Apparel Artistry
Instructor: Veronica Morgan
Ages 16+
Description: Stretch your creative sewing skills! In this class the garment becomes your artist palette. With a focus on fashion design, students will create wearable art apparel. Spend six weeks exploring textile embellishment techniques and other artistic approaches to apparel design and incorporate them to your personal style. Your imagination is your only limitation as you transform plain yardage into free form works of art! This is NOT a beginner sewing class therefore intermediate sewing and garment construction knowledge is strongly encouraged. Single needle sewing machines will be needed for almost all classes except the first night. Plan on bringing your machine to each class, starting week 2. Machines will be discussed during the first class. Inability to provide your own machine does not prevent you from signing up for the class. Call the instructor ahead of time to discuss. There will be up to 3 extra machines available.

Everything You Want to Know About Pastel
Instructor: Larry Blovits
Ages 18+
Master pastelist, Larry Blovits will discuss and demonstrate all the unique characteristics of hard and soft pastel sticks and pencils, and the painting surfaces of different papers and canvases. The opacity of the medium requires different thinking regarding the procedure applications on the part of the artist. He will also discuss using the texture of the paper by applying different stroke pressure to create both optical and physical blending. Larry will demonstrate a start-to-finish landscape painting that will serve to enlighten the student as to the gradual buildup by establishing the contours of color values working dark to light.
The students will then start their own pastel drawings working from their landscape source images. A critique of the work-in-progress and personal instruction will be given to every student regardless of their pastel knowledge. Advice and assistance will be given to beginners to patiently build their painting, and understand the reason for doing so. The same assistance will be given to the advanced students to test and question their up-to-date knowledge and expertise.
At the beginning of each session, Larry will demonstrate on another different painting surface so that the student will be aware of the requirements and procedures unique to that surface.
Instructional print outs will be distributed during each session. Pertinent Keynote programs will be shown to further clarify the step-by-step process of producing a pastel landscape.
Instructor Larry Blovits, a former Aquinas College professor, is the author of "Pastel for the Serious Beginner" published by Watson-Guptill, and been featured in a number of books on pastel. He has exhibited and won numerous awards for his pastel portraits and landscape, and has an international reputation for teaching as a workshop instructor. Beginning in 1975, he has taught workshops every year locally and nationally around the states, and abroad in England, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia.

Oil and Cold Wax

Squeegees and other tools are used to move the paint and create abstract and painterly images. Representational work can be incorporated or the scene can remain ethereal. Other mediums can be included: pastels, pigment powders, oil sticks and other mark making tools are introduced. This medium can be adapted to whatever style the artist wishes to express.
