About the Juror
Charles Murphy was first introduced to the magical possibilities of the world of drawing at the knee of his grandfather in rural southern Minnesota as a young boy. He pursued his passion for art with a BFA in studio arts from Minnesota State University and launched his career painting on the Eastern seaboard. As with many artists, Murphy has supported his art with a variety of jobs ranging from driving a school bus and pipefitting on natural gas pipelines, to furniture designer.

His art career spans more than 30 years and includes painting, teaching, and showing his art through galleries and summer art fairs. He began teaching soon after college and continued after his move to the Leelanau area of Michigan. His successful teaching skills have taken him overseas and also earned him Art Educator of the Year from the Traverse City Arts Council in 2003. He has garnered several Best of Show awards.Murphy’s work can also be found employed in other media including several award-winning books, CD labels, corporate reports, calendars and wine labels and resides in a number of corporate collections. In 2002, he was selected from a pool of 13,000 artists to be included in Artist’s Magazine 2002 limited edition calendar.

"CHAIR"ity

We are asking artists to take part in an enjoyable art project which will benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Ottawa County (CAC), who’s mission is “to protect children by providing multi-disciplinary intervention in investigation, assessment, and treatment of child sexual abuse in an environment that is child sensitive, supportive and safe” while they partner with the Holland Area Arts Council for a great event.

On December 4th, a musical celebration and auction will be held at the Arts Council to auction the hand painted rocking chairs. Rocking chairs were chosen to reflect the nurturing and comfort that is associated with them. The chairs will be on display throughout Ottawa County the month of November with a plaque stating the artists name and the local business that sponsored that chair. These chairs will give locals an opportunity to purchase a beautiful art piece while supporting a worthwhile cause.

We ask that artists consider the chair a canvas on which they will express their aesthetic message. We have a few guidelines for acceptability and we ask that you be sensitive to our mission; humor and whimsy are welcome and encouraged; beauty always! No political or social statements should be expressed. Chairs must remain functional.

Click Here for a form for you to fill out outlining your proposal for a creative work of art and is due by August 20th. Along with the form, we ask that you attach a picture of your concept. We have provided a drawing for you to start with. We have 20 adult and 10 youth chairs available to become masterpieces. The adult rocker is made from beech and is 17X16X40.25H. The youth rocker is made from parawood and is 15X13X29H. The artists who pass our panel’s review process will receive notification on August 25th and chairs will be available for pick up from the Arts Council on August 27th & 28th. At this time the artist will receive ½ of their stipend of $250. The chairs must be completed and returned to the Arts Council on Friday, September 30th or Saturday, November 1st. Upon completion and receipt of the chair, the artist will receive the rest of their stipend.
